Portugal v Hungary Preview, Prediction and Betting Tips: Selecao to put pressure on first place with comfortable home win against Hungary

Simon Harrison

An opening day defeat to Switzerland is the only thing that has stood between Portugal and the top of Group B, with Fernando Santos' men beginning to fire on all cylinders after a sluggish start. Three consecutive wins sees them come into this contest on song.

Portugal v Hungary: Match Preview

Hungary similarly had a slow first couple of games, with the visitors suffering their only qualifying defeat to Switzerland too. Two comfortable recent wins against Latvia and Andorra will have boosted spirits, but picking up six points against the two worst nations in the group is to be expected.

    -Switzerland 2-0 Portugal
    -Portugal 6-0 Andorra
    -Faroe Islands 0-6 Portugal
    -Portugal 4-1 Latvia

Portugal have scored 16 goals in their last three games, and managing to record back-to-back 6-0 victories over both Andorra and Faroe Islands. In their only tough fixture of Group B so far, they slipped up, with Hungary bound to take inspiration from drawing 3-3 with the Selecao last summer in Euro 2016.

The visitors have kept three clean sheets in their opening four games, one more than Portugal, but did fail to score on the road against minnows Faroe Islands. Bernd Stork's men can definitely remain organised and be tough to beat, but they haven't got the same firepower as their opponents this weekend.

    -Faroe Islands 0-0 Hungary
    -Hungary 2-3 Switzerland
    -Latvia 0-2 Hungary
    -Hungary 4-0 Andorra

Betting Advice

Nani and Adrien Silva miss out due to injury for the home side, with Renato Sanches retaining his place despite not being a first-team option at Bayern Munich. Monaco's in -form Bernardo Silva is one to watch, with star forward Cristiano Ronaldo scoring some important goals for Real Madrid in 2017.

Hungary will be capable of making a game of their trip to Estadio da Luz, but it is hard to look beyond Portugal for the three points. Fernando Santos' team need the three points to keep the pressure on Switzerland and their in-form striking options should secure them exactly that.
