Malta v Slovakia Preview, Prediction, and Betting Tips: Slovakia set to pick up first qualifying away victory versus the minnows of Malta

Simon Harrison

Malta are yet to taste anything other than defeat in Europe's World Cup qualifying Group F, with the home side turning into the whipping boys for the other bigger nations. Slovakia will look to take advantage of this fact to make it three consecutive competitive victories.

Malta v Slovakia: Match Preview

Slovakia's only away visit in this group resulted in a 1-0 defeat to Slovenia, but since then their confidence will have soared. Back-to-back home victories, winning 3-0 and 4-0 respectively against Scotland and Lithuania, will have Jan Kozak's men flying high.

    -Malta 1-5 Scotland
    -England 2-0 Malta
    -Lithuania 2-0 Malta
    -Malta 0-1 Slovenia

The hosts have netted just once during their opening four competitive qualifiers, with their defensive approach not offering a great deal on the counter-attack whatsoever. Naturalised striker Alfred Effiong has their only goal so far.

Slovakia have conceded just two goals in four outings, in contrast to Malta's 10, and have proven themselves to be a real test for even the group's big hitters. They should have little trouble in the way of sweeping aside their underdog opponents on the weekend.

    -Slovakia 0-1 England
    -Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia
    -Slovakia 3-0 Scotland
    -Slovakia 4-0 Lithuania

Betting Advice

Malta are without Rowen Muscat and Jurgen Pisani for the qualifier, with three foreign-based players only joining up with the rest of the team camp on Monday. Defenders Andrei Agius and Jonathan Caruana are both suspended for the hosts too, making matters worse for their hopes of keeping things tight.

The host nation's defensive absentees should make a comfortable win that little bit easier for Slovakia, who should be in form after scoring seven goals throughout their last two competitive games. There should be considerable daylight put between these two sides.
