Match Preview - 20:30 Kick-Off at Estádio da Luz, Lisbon

Even though it will only be April 1st when Benfica welcome Porto to the Estádio da Luz, it really does have the feel of a title deciding game. A victory for the home side would see them open up a 4 point lead over their bitter rivals in second. Both sides are well clear of 3rd placed Sporting Lisbon and they have only lost 3 games between them all season in the Primeira Liga.

Benfica are unbeaten in 7 league games and have won 4 home fixtures on the trot. Mirroring that, Porto have won their last 4 away games and they are currently on a 23 game unbeaten run overall. An irresistible force meets an immovable object, but something has to give.

The side’s goal scoring and defensive records are remarkably similar so far in the Prmieria Liga – Benfica have scored 56 and conceded 13, Porto 58 and 12 respectively. Back in November in the reverse fixture between the two Portuguese big hitters, the sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Lopez’ last minute equaliser stealing Benfica a share of the points. Benfica v Porto Predictions

With so little to choose between 1st and 2nd placed Benfica and Porto, it might well be the side who handles the pressure of such a huge game better that comes out on top. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them pick up a point each once again. It might come down to a battle between both sides star strikers Kostas Mitroglou of Benfica and Andre Silva of Porto – whoever has the better game could be the deciding factor. I’m going to go for a score draw here.

With so little separating the sides, it’s not surprising to see bookies give Benfica odds of 29/20 to win and Porto odds of 2/1 to do the same. Those odds make the home side slight favourites, but the crucial fixture on Sunday could really go either way. Bet365 have odds of 7/2 for both teams to score and for the match to finish as a draw which looks a good bet. If you think history will repeat itself with Benfica and Porto once again drawing 1-1, then Unibet offer odds of 23/4 for that to happen. That wouldn’t be the worst bet in the world.
