Bermuda is one of the most puzzling places on planet Earth, consisting of 181 islands, totalling 21 square miles. Water activities are the life-blood of Bermuda, and the 2017 America's Cup is one of the biggest events.

A Puzzling History

The America's Cup is one of the premier yacht racing competitions in the world. Founded in 1851, the America's Cup is one of the oldest of its kind. An event to honour the winners of the challenge selection series was formed in 1983. Since Louis Vuitton came up to sponsor this event, which has since been known as the Louis Vuitton Cup.

Even though it has now been rebranded as the America's Cup World Series, the event manages to hold a special place when it comes to America's Cup. Four out of the last eight successful teams in the Louis Vuitton Cup have gone on to win the competition.

Dominating Teams

The event has primarily hosted the IACC and AC72 classes with the former being the most predominant. IACC class events were held from 1992 to 2007. Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has been the most successful club after winning three events in the recent history of this competition.

All these three events have been achieved in the last five editions, making them a dominant force. Emirates Team New Zealand has been the winning syndicate in the last two editions of the Louis Vuitton Cup.

2017 Edition

After having served as America's Cup’s challenger selection series for more than two decades, this mantle will be taken over by the America's Cup World Series for the 2017 edition. The AC45 catamarans will be used for this edition, and it is a slightly smaller version of the AC72 class that was employed in the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup.

In the past, the success in this competition has enabled teams to rise up to the actual tournament, as they come up against various opponents with different tactics. The competition in the Louis Vuitton Cup has always been close due to the lack of differences in the boat speeds.

Defenders from team "17" (USA) will have a lot of work to do against Emirates Team New Zealand, that's for sure.
