‘Just insane’: Paul’s unbeaten run brought to a halt as ‘mental’ ref ‘steals the spotlight’

Jake Paul’s undefeated run has come to a shuddering halt as Tommy Fury defeated ‘The Problem Child’ via split decision.

However, Paul proved he could hang with a professional boxer and had plenty of moments of his own against Fury.

Fury came flying out of the blocks against Jake Paul, although the first round was dogged by plenty of clinching and wrestling

The fight got off to a flying start as Fury closed the distance early, although it was dogged by plenty of clinching and wrestling, a sign of things to come.

But Fury showed all of his professional nous to work intelligently in close quarters to take the lead through four rounds.

Perhaps it was a ringside interview with Logan Paul, Jake’s older brother, that revved Fury up as Logan exclaimed on the microphone that Fury was a “b****.”

The subsequent fifth round provided plenty of controversy as Paul was deducted a point for illegal strikes to the back of the head and Fury only let off with a warning.

Knowing he needed to quickly work his way back into the fight, Paul stepped on the accelerator and fired some strong shots at his rival, with one snapping Fury’s head back.

Fury was also deducted a point in the latter rounds for excessive grabbing.

The former Disney star even secured a knockdown in the eighth and final round, much to Fury’s bemusement.

However, it was ultimately not enough for ‘The Problem Child’ as Fury prevailed via split decision, with two judges awarding it 76-73 in his favour and one in Paul’s favour, 75-74.

It was Fury’s pure volume of strikes that no doubt aided him on the scorecards as he landed 49 power punches compared to Paul’s 24.

He also out-landed the social media star with 88 shots to 49.

The role of the referee also came under fire for his constant interventions throughout the bout and caught the ire of several boxing fans.

Swedish star walks out with 'Iron' Mike, becomes three-time world champ

‘Iron’ Mike Tyson is one of several stars in attendance for Jake Paul’s fight against Tommy Fury, but the heavyweight legend had a big interest in the co-main event.

Tyson walked out with Swedish cruiserweight Badou Jack ahead of his WBC world title fight against Ilunga Makabu.

Jack would go on to stop Makabu in the 12th round to become a three-time world champion.

The Swede dropped Makabu twice during the fight and rocked him in the final round before unleashing a barrage of strikes that forced the referee to step in and wave off the contest.

Aussie IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia no doubt watched the fight with plenty of interest as he looks to unify the division, with Jack now a name on his hit list.
