Racing tips: Calidad looks overpriced in the last at Fontwell

Steve Robinson

From the looks of it, Hystory Bere didn't quite stay out the trip as well as I anticipated, but I think that was due to a combination of the testing ground and testing track.

He was held up from off the pace and looked to coming with his effort but they got extremely tired and didn't make any further progress. The winner, who I thought was on a stiff mark, won easily and won by double-digit lengths.

Fontwell 4:40 – Calidad 12/1 (0.5pt ew 3 places bet365)

As we draw closer to the Cheltenham festival, racing is starting to look fairly dire, to say the least. Midweek racing is normally quite bland, but recently, it hasn't been great and not much really stands off the page as a bet other than the one in this race.

The horses towards the top of the market arrive in better form than my selection, but they have gone up in the weights, and I'm not totally convinced by their form and whether they'll be able to give the weight away to CALIDAD.

Before the race last time around Calidad finished second, and if he arrived to this race on the back of that run his odds would be shorter, but because he finished 4th/8 and finished 15L behind the winner he is a double-digit price, which I think is a tad too big and based on that he is an ew bet in this race. He is a horse who likes to front-run, and he probably went off a bit too quickly last time out. I thought the time when he did finish in second place was a good effort and today he has a 10lb claimer doing the steering, which will put him on a low weight in comparison to the others.

Sami Bear is a horse who has shown glimpses of promise before eventually delivering the goods at Kempton lto. However, he is a quirky sort and I wouldn't want to be backing him at short prices considering he has a mind of his own when jumping the last couple of hurdles. Issar D'Airy  was a winner when gambled on, but didn't manage to follow up on that and his new handicap mark has since kicked in, so I find it difficult to see him winning. Auba Me Yang won nicely at Ffos Las, but the form hasn't been great with the runner-up running poorly since.
