WGC-HSBC Champions Tips: Matsuyama to Retain His Title

Greg Jones

WGC-HSBC Champions Background

WGC-HSBC Champions is the fourth World Golf Championships of the calendar year and the first of the 2017/18 season. Played at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, the course is long in yardage, but plays even longer due to the changes in elevation. Trees are plentiful, so accuracy around this course will be key. We look at the golfers who will be fighting it out for the win, and those who are the ones to look out for in the golf betting tips. Golf markets to get involved in vary from the outright winner, top 5 or top 10 finishes, with many more in between and bookmakers are offering many odds on golf this week.

WGC-HSBC Champions Betting Tips

We have selected some of the best odds on the WGC-HSBC Champions as the World’s best golfers face off against each other this week. We select who are the best runners and riders shaping up in our WGC-HSBC Champions preview.

Hideki Matsuyama won this title last year, by an emphatic seven shots as well. He finished tied for fifth in his only start this season at the CIMB Classic a fortnight ago and also won the previous World Golf Championships event, the Bridgestone Invitational, which makes him one of the standouts in the WGC-HSBC Champions outright winner tips. Had it not been for a relatively poor final round of 71, Matsuyama would have taken the victory two weeks ago. As it stands he is fourth in the Overall World Golf Rankings and will hope this season is when he finally breaks his Major duck. He was top in driving accuracy at the CIMB Classic and coupled with his confidence and knowledge of this course from last year’s victory, this means Matsuyama stands out amongst the WGC-HSBC Champions tips.

Matt Kuchar is renowned for being one of the most consistent players in World golf, and it is this which usually sees him competing at the right end of the leaderboard, and which makes him a tip in the WGC-HSBC Champions Preview. It will be his first start of the season, and he’ll be hoping to pick up where he left off last season, picking up a top five and a top ten finish in the final two FedEx Cup Playoff events. Kuchar came so close to picking up his first major at The Open last year, losing out to an unstoppable Jordan Spieth. At this event last year, Kuchar nailed a hole-in-one, but poor first and final rounds bookended two excellent rounds on Friday and Saturday. But for a final round of 76, he would have been up near the top ten, and if he can bring his renowned consistency this week, he will be competing at the right end again. Ladbrokes have some of the best odds on WGC-HSBC Champions so Kuchar should be backed to finish in the top five as one of the golf tips.

Another consistent golfer that is more often than not at the top end of the leaderboard is Italian Francesco Molinari. He was in excellent nick here last year, finishing in a tie for sixth place. It is a course that suits the Italian, requiring accuracy off the tee and precision approach shots. He’s not quite got the distance off the tee like some of the other contenders have, but his ball striking and accuracy make up for that. A tie for sixth at the Italian Open two weeks ago showed he is in great form, and if he carries that into this World Golf Championships event, then he will be one of the strong WGC-HSBC Champions betting tips.
