Hungary - Portugal: the forecast for the match on June 22, 2016

Jack Young

In the final round of the group stage of Euro 2016 in Group F, Hungarian and Portuguese will play. Hungarians surprised many becoming the leaders of Group F, while the Portuguese settled only in the third place. Interestingly, Hungary team, contrary to expectations, is a leading the team. But the Portuguese are on the brink of relegation from the tournament, which was difficult to predict before the start of Euro 2016.

The Hungarian team was originally considered to be one of the main tournament outsiders. The team made it through to the European Championship play-offs against Norway with great difficulty, and even then, it was considered a feat. But the tale of the Hungarians continued on the fields of France: first Magyars unexpectedly defeated the Austrians with the score of 2: 0, and then in the last seconds played in a draw with uncompromising Icelanders. After the match with Icelanders, Hungarians cheered, celebrating its exit out of the group, though best odds of 4/9 are bordering on absurd given how profligate they have been in front of goal.

It often happens so that when a player knows that all the fans and a coach with partners expect something, the psychological burden of responsibility can play a cruel joke. This eventually happened with Cristiano Ronaldo. Yes, perhaps his missed penalty is a consequence of bad luck, but probably a multiple nominee of "Golden Ball" should find the net, as they say, "with his eyes closed." Nani’s disability to put away a couple of famous first-half opportunities in the match with Austria is a disappointment, too.

Generally, Nani uses every opportunity to hit, playing as an auxiliary center forward. And with 13/5 Ronaldo occupying the attention of most defenders while it is evident that he has some problems due to recent thigh trouble, Nani is still a preferable option to break the deadlock at 7/1.

Due to this fact, we give the price 5/2 because of the following: Nani’s best opportunities happened in the first half in the first two games; We do not hope to see a lot of goals, as Hungary is rather well organised.

It is nowhere else to retreat

After two starting fights, Portugal has only two points. If Portugal does not beat the Hungarians, they risk leaving the tournament in the group stage. According to bookmakers, Portuguese national team must beat Hungary. Therefore, the 9/2 available on Portugal 1-0 might seem intuitively skinny but could be an excellent price. At the same time, a goalless draw would probably take Portugal through although placing them against Croatia team in the last 16.
