PGA Championship 2017: American Justin Thomas Wins First Major

The PGA Championship has always delivered thrills during the final hours of the incredibly amazing battle for the Wanamaker Trophy, and even though Quail Hollow hosted the event for the first time, Justin Thomas' victory win boasts all the unique excitement we have to expect from such a tournament.

Lucky Moments for Justin Thomas

During Sunday evening's critical moment, as many as five players held a share of the lead, yet Thomas used gamesmanship to bring the gallery their feet at every turn. That championship slid its way into Justin Thomas' favour on the par-5 tenth hole. His tee shot was really lucky as it bounced off some trees and the ball actually landed back in the fairway.

Moreover, he missed the green on his approach shot and quickly stared down a birdie opportunity. The world could almost see that birdie putt missing to the left, sitting on the lip of the cup for nearly twelve seconds before finally falling in and boosting JT's energy all the way to the final moment of the win.

This is a completely new milestone for Justin Thomas, who emerged from a shadow and won the incredibly important PGA Championship to earn a well-deserved place among the young elite in golf. At the end, Mike Thomas, who is a longtime professional in Kentucky and former PGA board member, went along the edge of the 18th green and hugged the major champion, his son.

His Greatest Rival

In the final hour, only five players were still down to it. Thomas went ahead by simply chipping in from forty feet on the par-3 13th hole and stayed much-focused one after another endeavour. Justin Thomas greatest rival was Hideki Matsuyama, who almost recovered from some back-to-back errors with two consecutive birdies on the 15th and 14th holes. Yet everything changed on the 16th hole.

In order to stay at eight under, Justin Thomas saw the challenge in a 6-foot par putt, while his opponent Matsuyama chipped to 5 feet. At this point, Thomas was laser focused and didn't miss a thing, but Matsuyama missed. Two shots ahead, Thomas managed a 7-iron from impressive 221 yards. With a lead up to 3, he was going to the 18th.

Justin Thomas' victory came at 8-under 276.

A Summary of Thomas' Victory

After Justin Thomas' 5th PGA Tour victory, his 4th in 2017, came at a very crucial moment. The PGA professional was two behind to start on Sunday, and he went through some risky turns until his birdie putt dropped after a lengthy hang over the hole. His victory was starting to emerge three holes later when his chip at the par-3 13th found the cup. Thomas is the PGA Champion, the son and grandson of American PGA professionals.

Biggest Disappointments

Hideki Matsuyama remains the biggest disappointment of the competition. He played alongside the champion in the second-to-last pairing and tried to deliver a first major victory for Japan, but he missed some critical shots and went behind Thomas on the 16th green. Matsuyama lipped out a four-and-a-half par putt and fell two behind. Both Chris Stroud and Kevin Kisner played well over par Sunday.
