Jon Rahm held off Max Homa to win the Genesis Invitational on Sunday and overtake Scottie Scheffler for the world number one ranking.
Spain’s Rahm carded a two-under par 69 for a 17-under par total of 267 to beat Homa by two strokes at Riviera Country Club.
Rahm claimed his third US PGA Tour title of 2023 to return to the top of the rankings for the first time since March of 2022. Rahm has also now earned over $9.8 million USD this season.
He supplanted Scheffler just a week after the American won the Phoenix Open to replace Rory McIlroy at the summit.
Homa came agonisingly short to forcing a playoff, with his chip on 18 almost finding the bottom of the cup in what would have been a remarkable shot.
Australian star Jason Day also had a stunning rise on the final day of the Genesis Open.
Day rose 17 places to finish T-9 alongside Gary Woodland and Adam Svensson after he carded a six-under par Round 4.
Unfortunately there was no fairytale finish for Tiger Woods.
The golf legend had his second-worst round at the Genesis Invitational, shooting two-over par 73 to finish T-45 and dropped 19 places in the process.
