Candice Warner believes her unique perspective as a former professional athlete will help her connect with the sport stars of today in her new role as a regular panellist on The Back Page.
Warner, who first appeared as a guest panellist last year and “absolutely loved” the experience, joins the show she “religiously watched“ while growing up in a sports mad family on a full-time basis.
She will appear alongside host Tony Squires alongside a rotating cast of journalists and sport stars past and present every Tuesday night.
Having earned her stripes as a former professional Ironwoman, Warner already knows the ins and outs of what it’s like to be a full-time athlete.
It’s an asset she’s excited to put to good use when discussing all things sport each week on the show, even if, by her own admission, she’s “not an expert.”
“I could say I’m an expert in my chosen sport, but I’m not a journalist,” Warner said.
“So what I feel where I’m most comfortable and what I love to talk about is that I understand the athletes. I understand the pressures, I understand what they might be going through, what their family goes through, the sacrifices.
“I can see things from their point of view and it’s really nice to share that with the athletes.
“Sometimes journalists can be really hard-hitting and want that headline and can’t see it from the athlete or player’s point of view.
“I can see it. I can see how they think very differently to other people. So it’s nice to be able to have that in common with the people that we often interview every episode.”
Warner’s new gig on The Back Page is just the latest in a sports media career she had “always hoped” she would have.
“Last year I started to do some work at Triple M with the Dead Set Legends, and now doing stuff with The Back Page, it’s giving me an opportunity to have an opinion and to talk about sport, which I love and is my first love,” Warner said.
“Growing up, I’d always go to South Sydney Rabbitohs games every weekend with my Dad and my brothers, so my love of NRL has always been there.
“It’s nice to be able to showcase my love of sport and have an opinion on what’s going on now, but also talk about my journey in sport as well.”
