Victoria’s Mitch Perry has taken one of the catches of the season, soaring into the air to dismiss Western Australia’s Hilton Cartwright before celebrating wildly.
After Victoria tallied just 195 runs in the first innings of the Sheffield Shield final at the WACA, the visitors hit back on Day 2 with four wickets for the price of just 11 runs – capped off by Perry’s brilliance in the gully.
Western Australia had reached 0-42 before losing Sam Whiteman (20), Cameron Bancroft (26), and 18-year-old Teague Wyllie (3) in a dazzling sequence of brilliant bowling from Scott Boland and Will Sutherland.
The pair stanched the flow of runs with disciplined bowling that piled the pressure back on the hosts, and after 18 balls without a run, Cartwright slashed at a short wide ball from Sutherland.
His cut shot seemed destined to race away to the boundary for four, only for 22-year-old paceman Perry to fly through the air and somehow hold onto the ball as it rocketed in his direction.
He wheeled away as he celebrated wildly, while Cartwright was stunned as he trudged off for a duck.
In commentary, Brendon Julian was amazed, saying: “What a great catch. What about that! He knows it too – that is unbelievable. That is just a superb catch there.”
