Road bicycling events have enjoyed tremendous popularity across the world. This is especially true of one of the oldest road bicycling events, Eneco Tour. It gains its name from sponsors Eneco Energie. The first edition of the tour was held in 2005, but the event has its origins as the Tour of Netherland back in 1948. Back then, the competition was being held sporadically, but it was transformed into an annual event only from the 1975 season. The tour underwent significant changes during the 2005 season after its inclusion into the UCI ProTour and the UCI World calendar.

What You Need to Know

Even though it is held annually during the month of August, the Eneco Tour 2016 is being held as a September event in order to accommodate the Rio Olympics. Spanish, Norwegian, and Belgian riders have dominated the event with two victories apiece for Iván Gutiérrez (ESP), Edvald Boasson Hagen (NOR), Tim Wellens (BEL). The upcoming event in 2016 will start from September 19 and it will be the 12th event following the numerous formats changes more than a decade ago.

Due to the lack of modern history, it may be difficult to predict the Eneco Tour without assistance from the betting tips. This became of greater importance for punters who bet online since there are a lot of odds available.

Programme

Stage 1 of the event will begin at the Bolsward while the stage II will feature a time trial event at Breda. The next two stages are at Ardooie and St-Pieters-Leeuw before the time trial resumes with the event at Sittard-Geleen on September 23. The event then progresses through Lanaken before concluding at the Geraardsbergen on September 25. Organisers of the event have taken care so as to ensure that the race is a perfect preparation for riders ahead of the World Cycling Championships in Qatar in October.

Who Are The Favourites

Hence, the event features a mix of flat stages where sprinters can hone their skills while the time trial events will also be a huge testing platform for those riders. Tim Wellens of Belgium managed to come out successful in 2015, which also helped him to defend the title that he had won a year ago.

Greg Van Avermaet of BMC came second – 59 seconds behind Wellens – while Wilco Kelderman of Team LottoNL-Jumbo finished 3rd to complete the podium. Wellens, who is a favourite in the best odds, managed to achieve this success in stage 6 as he stripped of the leader’s jersey from Kelderman. There's a host of big names set for the start line, and Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) will definitely be amongst the favourites for winning. Reigning world champion Sagan Peter (Tinkoff) will also come. Tom Boonen from Etixx-QuickStep will also make his final appearance on Belgian soil.
