UFC 217 is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory with Bisping – St. Pierre, also featuring a bantamweight title match between Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw. Stephen Thompson and Jorge Masvidal have been added to the card and many people are considering it the most enticing bout of the night.

The fight between Stephen Thompson and Jorge Masvidal will take place on Saturday, November 4th, at Madison Square Garden during UFC 217. This is a Welterweight contender match between Thompson (13-2-1) and Masvidal (32-12). Thompson is returning to the octagon after a decision loss to Tyron Woodley and Masvidal is also fighting for the first time since his loss, a split-decision to Demian Maia. Thompson is Ranked #2 in Welterweight, Masvidal losing could be title-eliminator for Woodley's welterweight crown.
Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson was on the heels of winning his first UFC championship but couldn't overcome Tyron Woodley in back-to-back losses, a majority draw and a majority decision. With Woodley moving on and defending his title against Demian Maia, Thompson turns his attention to working his way back up to #1 contender. Masvidal has the same intentions as he aims to earn his first title opportunity since coming to the UFC.
Masvidal has experience with 44 fights under his belt including time with Bellator and Strikeforce to name a few. Masvidal is a pure athletic fighter who has only been knocked out once and has a takedown accuracy of 61%. Thompson has knockouts in three of his last five victories and has experience fighting in New York. Thompson won six straight fights before his bouts with Woodley.
Masvidal lacks major big time fight experience and he has four losses in last eight fights. On the other hand, although with less MMA experience, Thompson is actually the older fighter (34 to 32).
“Wonderboy” is a very popular fighter which may be dictating the odds. Although Thompson is a world class kickboxer and five of his last eight wins have come via a knockout, Masvidal hasn't been knocked out since 2008. It's hard to predict this fight in detail, but in general terms, Masvidal is the better player and has the highest chances of winning.
If Thompson is still consumed by his last two bouts against Woodley, the easiest (and most profitable) bet in this fight would be a Masvidal win. That being said, it may be those two big name fights with Woodley that actually give "Wonderboy" the edge in this one. Fighters like Masvidal love the spotlight, but it's a different animal when you actually get into the cage with the anticipation and energy that emanates from a major event crowd. Even though he has 44 fights under his belt, the adrenaline could be working against Masvidal in this one that he wants so bad. Masvidal will need to win by knockout, otherwise, the decision is going to Thompson, but we'll just go with an outright win to be sure.
Masvidal would be riding a four-game fight winning streak into the bout if not for a controversial split decision loss to Demian Maia, who had won six straight fights himself. In addition, over 60% of his latest fights took place in more than 2.5 rounds. Masvidal is a pure fighter and a brawler but it's something Thompson actually welcomes after his two five-round fights against Woodley. This is why we expect the fight to be longer than usual. The stakes are quite high, Somebody is getting sent to the canvas in this fight but there's also a good chance Dana White wants Thompson/Woodley Part 3 somewhere down the line.
