Match Preview

Chelsea and Italian side Roma have met four times previously with Chelsea winning a two-legged 1965 Fairs Cup tie 4-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away. More recently they met in the 2008 Champions League, with the Blues recording a 1-0 home success before losing the return fixture 4-1. Chelsea top the UEFA Champions League, Group C after two games. They beat Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge, before winning 2-1 at Atletico Madrid in something of an upset. Domestically, Chelsea’s defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday was something of a shock, as they expected to record their fifth win of the season, but with others also dropping points, the Premier League champions sit just off the pace in fifth place behind leaders Manchester City.

Roma have started the Italian La Liga season well, with five wins before Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Napoli, the only other reverse coming at the hands of Inter. They had previously won each of their last four league games by two clear goals or more and held their opponents scoreless in three of those four games.

Our Chelsea vs Roma preview and soccer predictions suggest that the hosts will find it tough to break down the Italian side and that a draw represents value. We also highlight in our Chelsea vs Roma predictions that the visitors have looked sharp up front in domestic competition and they should be good for a goal.

Chelsea vs Roma Prediction and Betting Advice

Roma have been weakened through injury but it has not stopped them from winning and they had key players back for last Saturday’s clash with Napoli. Rossi, Pellegrini and Strootman have all recovered from injuries to strengthen the midfield. While that huge clash may have taken a little out of the Giallorossi, they should have a near full-strength side for the UEFA Champions League, Group C in London.

Chelsea’s 1-0 home defeat by Manchester City was their second loss on their own turf and while they have not had the easiest of starts, having had to play Tottenham Arsenal and City, they have not been particularly convincing at Stamford Bridge. Antonio Conte’s side have failed to score in each of their last two home games and while they beat Everton 2-0, they also conceded three to Burnley in a 3-2 defeat on opening day.

There has been some adjustment to life without Diego Costa and until their reverse at Selhurst Park, they have been better away from home when playing on the break, as wins at Spurs, Leicester and Stoke show.

Our Chelsea vs Roma betting tips suggest that outside of that big win over minnows Qarabag, their home form is patchy and until they start showing their true colours, they are worth opposing. Chelsea may struggle to break down a Roma side that is capable of scoring goals and the visitors may well be value for a draw. In this market, the value lies with Sportingbet.

Edin Dzeko’s return to Stamford Bridge adds a little more spice to this clash and he has been on the scoresheet at least once in five of Roma’s last six Serie A games. The lanky hitman has struck up a good partnership with Stephen El Shaaraway, but the Italian international is likely to be ruled out with a thigh injury.

While this limits Roma’s attacking options, Chelsea have conceded in five of their last eight league games. Roma have managed to find the net in all three Serie A games on the road and at Qarabac in the Champions League. This is a trend worth exploiting.

Chelsea’s home form is such that they are susceptible to letting a goal or two in and at the current soccer odds, taking the visitors to score at least once appears one of the more intriguing Chelsea vs Roma bets. William Hill’s odds for that to happen, appear to be on the mark and we should take advantage.
