Wigan returned to the Championship with high hopes but the season turned into a nightmare, and they are hot favourits to go straight back down to League One. Wigan are seven points from safety with five matches remaining, and that means they must win at least all of their home fixtures to stand any chance of remaining in the division. The game against Barnsley is the easiest on paper, even though it is still rather tough, given the fact that visitors won nine away matches already. However, Barnsley have nothing to play for, and that makes Wigan slight favourites in the tight fixture.
Wigan dramatically scored deep in injury time on Saturday to beat rock-bottom Rotherham and stop the run of four consecutive losses. That could probably give Wigan self confidence, even though it should be taken into account those were their first goals on home ground since early February. Barnsley won themselves on Saturday, beating Blackburn after eight games in a row without a win. Barnsley are wildly inconsistent, and Wigan will probably hope that Barnsley have a poor day in order to take the much needed three points. The odds are interesting at 2.20.
