Gianfranco Zola got the dreaded vote of confidence from Birmingham’s owners this week, with the Italian coach probably relieved to travel to the Championship’s rock-bottom side, Rotherham.
Since the sacking of Gary Rowett, the Blues have dropped off horrendously, slipping from play-off contenders down to 18th place in the table. Rotherham, meanwhile, are 20 points adrift of second-bottom.
Rotherham haven’t picked up a win in their last 15 league matches, losing a whopping 14 of them in the process in their plummet down into League One.
Last time out, they pushed Wigan all of the way in a 3-2 thriller, with Birmingham arriving having won just one of their last 11 games themselves. This is a battle of the out-of-form sides.
Birmingham have actually lost just one of their last four away games, with Zola’s men doing far better on the road than they have been doing at St. Andrew’s. That sole defeat came against second-placed Brighton.
Both of these teams are in awful form, but Birmingham’s signs of life on the road of late could point towards under-fire coach Gianfranco Zola picking up a vital three points to help save his job.
