Match Preview – Friday 12st July – 1730 – Kia Oval.
Middlesex head across the capital to take on London rivals Surrey at the Kia Oval. The visitors have struggled in this competition so far while the hosts are level on points with the leaders but have played two games more.
Surrey and Middlesex do battle in the Natwest T20 Blast, with both teams focused on improving their records in the tournament to date. Our Surrey vs Middlesex preview features two teams that have had very different levels of success in the competition.
There is one name on the Surrey team-sheet that is ultimate box-office and that is of course Kevin Pietersen. The Ex-England batsman is Hollywood in every sense and will fill the stands on reputation alone. His first game back for the county he made a brilliant half-century. He is ably supported by Kumar Sangakkara and Tom Curran who have both been brilliant in the competition. Middlesex have a star name of their own in Brendon McCullum. The Ex-New Zealand gloveman hit the first IPL century and has been destructive in the shortest form of the game. England’s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan provides support with the bat while Steve Finn is the class act with the ball
Surrey have had a narrow win over Somerset, plus home and away victories over Essex so far in the tournament. They lost a narrow match to Middlesex by one wicket, and were beaten convincingly in a high-scoring match against Kent. Middlesex meanwhile beat Surrey and had a tie with Gloucestershire before back-to-back defeats against Hampshire and Somerset.
The sides have played five times in T20 Blast history and Middlesex lead the way with three wins. Surrey have two wins and most interestingly no side has been beaten at home in this fixture which is good news for Surrey.
Surrey have been solid in this tournament and the return of KP will be massive for them. What has been most impressive has been their composure with the ball at the death, Tom Curran has been a revalation. Middlesex have class in abundance and it is set fair for a fantastic contest. Surrey will hope that home advantage will be key though.
The obvious choice given their international credentials but Brendon McCullum and Kevin Pietersen always shine in the big game and a Kia Oval jam packed is a great stage for the pair to shine. So both to lead the run-scoring for their respective team is where the value is.
