Essex travel to the Kia Oval to take on Surrey in a bid to kickstart their faltering T20 Blast campaign. Essex are second-bottom in the South Group with just one win in four, and will be hoping for a win to move them up the table.
Essex will be hoping to get their Natwest T20 Blast challenge back on track as they travel to the capital to face Surrey. Our Surrey vs Essex preview features two teams that have struggled to turn solid performances into winning results in this year’s Blast. Essex have been performing with the bat, but have struggled to defend even the big totals. Meanwhile Surrey have been slightly more consistent in both disciplines and will be hoping to get back to to winning ways.
For Surrey, Kumar Sangakkara has been prolific in all forms of the game scoring runs aplenty with class and skill. He has been backed up by Aaron Finch at the top of the order. Australian Finch is a class act and is averaging 47 in the competition this year. For Essex, Varun Chopra and Ravi Bopara have been brilliant with the bat, the former scoring a magnificent unbeaten 103 and averaging just over 57. South African off-spinner Simon Harmer has been the form man with the ball taking six wickets at 21.33.
Surrey have played four matches in this competition so far, winning two and losing two. They beat Essex in the first game of the tournament, before beating Somerset two days later. They were then beaten by Middlesex and Kent on consecutive days to suffer a slump in form. Essex lost to Surrey and Kent in the opening matches, before beating Somerset for their only win so far. They fell agonizingly short against Glamorgan in a match where nearly 450 runs were scored.
Ahead of our Surrey vs Essex prediction we first look at the head-to-head record between the two teams. The sides have met five times in the Natwest T20 Blast. Surrey lead the way with three wins, while Essex have triumphed on two occasions.

Essex’s bowlers have struggled to contain batting sides in this tournament and Surrey’s batting is packed full of class to exploit any weakness they might find. Surrey will be looking to bowlers Jade Dernbach and Tom Curran, the latter having been superb with the ball at the death and in the powerplay.
Aaron Finch has been in sublime form in this year’s Blast and look for him to continue that run-scoring in this match. Mohammed Amir is the best bowler Essex have, and his side will be heavily reliant on the Left-armer from Pakistan to restrict the talented Surrey order.
