Past Winners

Fiji have managed to win four out of the last five events. Only New Zealand have been able to break that streak, as they succeeded in 2014. New Zealand and Fiji have been the most successful teams and they share 27 titles between them. Australia come a distant third in terms of championships after having secured only five titles.

The 2017 Hong Kong Sevens sees South Africa coming with a 23 point advantage over England after having taken up 126 points. South Africa have been able to claim victory in four rounds with England managing wins from the other two. Despite coming into the tournament as the Olympic champions, Fiji are yet to win any round and the team are currently third in the table.

Being closer to home, however, Fiji cannot be taken lightly ahead of the games. Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau has been confident in front of the media ahead of the event. Fiji are in the group containing New Zealand, Japan, and Wales.

The USA managed to reach the semi-finals in Vancouver and Las Vegas. The team would be looking to go one better in this event. The USA are in a strong pool containing the likes of Russia, Scotland, and Argentina. England are placed in a group containing Australia, South Korea, and Samoa. Leaders South Korea are in the pool B which also contains Canada, Kenya, and France.

The 2017 edition will start tomorrow and run until April 9.

The Hong Kong Sevens is one of the premier tournaments on the World Rugby Sevens Series. It's now seven years old on the world's rugby calendar and is usually organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union.

Speaking of format, is has always been contested by 24 teams, but one thing that must be mentioned is that all other World Series events had only 16 teams participating - that was until the 2012/2013 edition. These teams are divided into six categories/pools of four teams. Teams advance through the tournament by accumulating points that count for the rankings in the World Series.

Hong Kong Teams Announced for Two Major Events

The Hong Kong Rugby Union (HKRU) announced in late March that their men's and women's 7s teams will compete this weekend in the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong 7s and at the World Rugby Women's 7s Series Qualifier. Much is at stake when it comes to this because Hong Kong have managed to reach the semi-finals in the past two years in the women's 7s and their nation is waiting for them to replicate that success.

The men's team will try to qualify for the World Rugby 7s Series. They have been awarded the Samsung Sports Stars Team Award for the seventh time last week.
