In what was a thrilling Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix 2017, Lewis Hamilton won the Drivers’ Championship, despite only finishing in ninth position during the race. Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the race by nearly 20 seconds, taking advantage of the chaos in behind him that including early pit stops for both Hamilton and his rival Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas finished in second place, while Vettel’s team mate Kimi Raikkonen rounded off the podium places.
However, despite the action at the head of the race, all eyes were on Hamilton as he looked to secure his fourth Drivers’ Championship. The win puts him in the all-time top five drivers when it comes to titles, and with time on his side you wouldn’t bet against him beating the record to become number one. Michael Schumacher currently holds the record for the number of titles with seven to his name, Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio has five, with Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost tied with four.
The title didn’t look in the bag after the first lap though, both Hamilton and Vettel suffered damage in a collision. Hamilton left for an early pit stop to repair a puncture, while Vettel needed a new front wing. They both re-entered the race, and had to weave their way through the field in an attempt to get competitive again. They did that, with Vettel working his way up to fourth, and Hamilton being happy to finish in ninth, a place that would secure him his fourth Drivers title.
At just 32 years old, and with such a great car behind him, Hamilton will have his eyes on Michael Schumacher and seven world titles. He has the car, and certainly has the ability to do it and it will be fascinating to see how he performs over the next few years in his bid for the crown. The win already makes him the most successful British racing driver in history, but Hamilton will be determined to go better than that with the time left in his career.
