This year’s edition of the second most prestigious chase in England has been organized on Boxing Day. Might Bite, who was recognized as the hottest favorite to win this year’s edition, held on to a thrilling finish and won King George VI Chase. Double Shuffle chased for a superb second place, while Tea for Two crossed the finish line as third. This has been the first title for Might Bite and his rider Nico de Boinville.

In the Build-Up for the King George VI Horse Race 2017

Might Bite was considered as the first favorite by the bookies prior to the King George VI Chase 2017 with pretty high odds at 6/4. Followed by Bristol De Mai and Whisper with the odds of 7/2 and 7/1, it was clear that he and his rider Nico de Boinville were going to command the chase. The biggest outsiders were Tea for Two, priced at 25/1, Double Shuffle with the odds at 66/1, and Traffic Fluide who would bring the bettors 100 times of their stake in case of winning the race. The current winner, Thistlecrack, was priced at 7/1, the same as Whisper, although he rather fluffed lines early this month. The horses were supposed to negotiate 18 fences in a three-mile race.

The Chase

After a few uncharacteristic mistakes of the second favorite Bristol De Mai on the first circuit and Whisper being beaten a long way out, Might Bite and De Boinville found themselves dominating the race. They were several lengths clear of Double Shuffle and Tea for Two with only three fences left to jump. Thistlecrack, the last year’s King George VI Chase winner, didn’t pose many troubles to the favorite. However, it seemed like Might Bite was getting tired in the final quarter-mile, though the jockey didn’t have any doubts. “I think he would have gone again if something had come to me,” he said. “You don’t jump the last like he did if you’re a tired horse.”
