I.K. Kim Wins First Major Title at Women's British Open

I.K. Kim finally banished that long-haunting memory of notoriously missing a random 14-inch putt to get her hands on a major at Kraft Nabisco Championship and did something better five years later. Now, she is finally a major champion. Let's discuss the 2017 Women's British Open results.

Last weekend, at Kingsbarns Links in Scotland, she led throughout the Women's British Open and didn't let anyone get too close to her, although the golf betting odds didn't promise her a great success. She had a 6-shot lead going into the final round on August 6, and it was real hard work. I.K. Kim sealed a very important victory for her with a very bold hybrid over the burn right to the 17th green.

Women's British Open Results: Key Moments During The Tournament

Kim actually made 9 pars on the back 9 and closed that part with a 71 for a 2-shot win. Kim confessed to the reports after winning the event that she did her best to have fun, but it certainly wasn't fun on the back nine. Shadoff strived to make Kim work for it when it charged home with a gorgeous 64 in order to put high pressure on Kim. She did not falter over a soggy course and finished 18-under 275 to grab the whopping $487,600 prize.

Michelle Wie gave I.K. Kim something to ponder with a 30, yet the Hawaii-based player stalled and she managed to close with a 66 to ultimately tie for a 3rd with Georgia Hall (70) and Carloline Masson (67).

Kim has won 3 times now, an achievement unparalleled by other players in the LPGA Tour in 2017, and she managed to do that in just two months. The Women's British Open is by far the biggest one.

The Nightmare is Over

If Kim's career was defined by that awful 14-inch par putt she notoriously missed on the 72nd green five years ago at the 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship, it will no longer be the case. That putt will no longer be the seminal moment of her career.

The Women's British Open winner told the reporters that she had already experienced the worst on the gold field, thus now was just trying to have fun out there. In the past few years, she has gone through a very long process of rebooting her psychological fears drawn by that key moment in her golf caeer. Kim said her team helped a lot and she started to enjoy golf again. One of the secrets she mentioned is related to putting every bit of effort into each and every shot, but making it a playful kind of effort.

During the final rounds, Wie was keen to reaching Kim on the leaderboard with 5 birdies in her first 7 holes, including 4 in a row from the 4th. When she actually closed the front nine with a birdge on the 9th, she was moving to 13 under. The closest she got to Kim was 14 under, just four shots adrift of Kim. An error at the 17th stopped her challenge.

Although Wie is proud of the way she chased Kim, she didn't make it. Kim claimed just one day before the final round that she had banished those ghosts of 2012, but she still needed to prove it.

And she did. She became the Women's British Open winner.

Kim's Kraft Nabisco Championship nightmare is over.
