Tottenham Hotspur Football Club

The club was founded by a group of boys in 1882 along Tottenham High Road and they are now one of the most profitable and successful football clubs in Europe.

The club's crest features a cockerel and was first introduced in 1921 when they won the FA Cup. The cockerel has been a part of the club's logo since then, and it was redesigned in 2006.

This was thanks to Dr Arnold's "Muscular Christianity", a movement that encouraged the development of sports-minded clergymen who wanted to share their faith with young people through the power of football. The movement was a success and it was widely spread across England in the mid-19th century.

At the time, many working class football clubs were founded by workers at factories. One of the most famous working class clubs was Arsenal, which got its name from the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory, located on the south bank of the River Thames in London.

On March 2, 1898, the club became a limited company and changed its name to Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Company. They appointed Frank Brettell as the first manager and he signed several players from northern clubs.

In 1899, they won their first trophies. The Southern League title and the FA Cup. The following year, they joined the Football League.

The team started attracting large crowds and was successful in gaining promotion to the First Division. They also won the FA Cup in 1901 and became a major force on the British football scene.

First team

Founded in 1882 by a group of grammar school boys from All Hallows Church in North London, the club became professional in 1895 and began playing in the Southern League in the summer of that year. It was a few years later that the club became a limited company and the name of the club changed to Tottenham Hotspur, after their home ground at White Hart Lane in the Tottenham area of London.

The original team played in all blue shirts and wore navy shorts from 1882-1885 but then changed to delicate chocolate striped shirts and gold shorts with the same colours as their local rivals Arsenal. The club also adopted white shirts and blue shorts as a tribute to FA Cup winners Preston North End, who had done “the double” in the same season.

However, it wasn’t until the 1949-50 season that the club really took off with new manager Arthur Rowe implementing a revolutionary push-and-run tactics that was dubbed “pass and go”. In the following season they won their first First Division title and established themselves as one of the premier sides in English football.

With this success came some big name players including Glenn Hoddle, Osvaldo Ardiles and Steve Perryman. These stars were instrumental in the club’s rise to become a top side and went on to play 655 league games for the club.

After relegation in the 1976-77 season, the club opted for Keith Burkinshaw as their manager and the pair went on to win a league and cup double. Unfortunately, Burkinshaw walked out on the club within a couple of days. The club was then managed by David Pleat and went on to reach their eighth FA Cup final, losing out on their first ever trophy to Coventry City by 3-2 after extra time in 1987.

First manager

In 1895, a Bible class teacher named John Ripsher was asked by members of the local All Hallows church to oversee the formation of the club, which he did. It was under his management that the famous “push and run” tactical style of play developed. The players were encouraged to run past defenders and lay the ball off to a team-mate. This was an innovative and effective way to move the ball quickly and efficiently across the pitch.

First title

First FA Cup win

Tottenham hotspur football club was founded in 1882 as a cricket team named "Tottenham Hotspur". The first games were played at the Lee River marshes in Tottenham and were arranged by a Bible class teacher called John Ripsher. In 1888 the club moved to Northumberland Park in London and started charging an attendance fee of 3d. The ground soon became a popular place to watch football and crowds began to increase.

The following year the club moved into the Southern League and won the league title. They were also elected to the FA Cup in 1921, a feat they repeated in the subsequent season and also retained that trophy in 1925.

Arthur Rowe took over as manager in 1949 and brought a new "push-and-run" style of play to the club. The tactics, which involved short passes and constant ball movement, proved a success and led to Spurs winning the first division league championship in 1950-51.

This was followed by a rare double in 1960-61, which included winning the FA Cup, which they did again in 1962. The club also won the European Cup in 1963, which was their first major continental trophy.

Despite the incredible success of this period, Tottenham was not able to maintain it and went into decline. The 'push-and-run' style of play was not as effective in later years and Spurs found themselves competing against other teams that were better equipped to cope with it.

Bill Nicholson replaced Rowe as manager in 1958 and the next season saw a promising start. A 10-4 victory over Everton in the season opener prompted Nicholson to start signing players. This was a promising sign but it wasn't to last and the side ended up finishing in 18th position.
