PL side sensationally dumped out of FA Cup by League Two minnows in 63-place boilover

Southampton has been sensationally dumped out of the FA Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby Town, with the visitors stealing a 2-1 win at St Mary’s to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Saints, who sit in last spot in the Premier League, held a 63-place advantage over their rivals in the English football pyramid.

However, it was the Mariners who emerged victors thanks to two penalties from Gavan Holohan.

Holohan opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before adding another from the spot five minutes after the interval.

Southampton defender Duje Caleta-Car pegged one back in the 65th minute to give the home fans a glimmer of hope.

And the Saints thought they’d scored a late equaliser through Theo Walcott, but the former Arsenal winger was adjudged to have been offside from James Ward-Prowse's’s free-kick.

However, Grimsby Town managed to hold on to move into the FA Cup quarter finals for the first time in 84 years.

Southampton weren’t the only Premier League team knocked out by one in a lower division, with Tottenham Hotspur bundled out by Championship side Sheffield United.

The Blades beat Spurs 1-0 thanks to Illiman Ndiaye’s 79th-minute strike to extend the London outfit’s trophy drought.

Elsewhere, Manchester United came from behind to beat West Ham United 3-1 with teenage sensation Alejandro Garnacho scoring the winner in the 90th minute before Fred put the result beyond doubt five minutes later.

Championship leaders Burnley left it late to get it done against 10-man Fleetwood Town, as Connor Roberts’ 90th-minute goal was the difference.
