The former England cricket captain was taken to hospital for treatment after the crash, which took place at the Dunsfold Park Aerodrome. The injuries sustained by the 43-year-old are not thought to be life-threatening, a source said. The accident happened during the filming of a review segment about cars.
The Top Gear show has been popular on the BBC since the 1970s. It has featured celebrity guests like Tom Cruise, Lewis Hamilton and Rowan Atkinson. It has also had a few dangerous crashes while filming. The most famous was a three-wheeled vehicle being driven at 124mph by presenter Richard Hammond. The vehicle was flipped several times before crashing and sending Hammond to hospital. The former presenter recovered from his injuries, but he was left in a coma for two weeks.
The accident occurred while Flintoff was filming a car review segment at the Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. He was not a passenger, but was driving the vehicle, according to a source. At the time of the accident, he was filming at a speed of 125 mph. The tyre on the front right side of the vehicle veered off the runway and landed on the ground. The crew immediately attended the scene and medics were on hand to treat him. It is believed that he was given medical care at the scene before being airlifted to the hospital for further treatment.
A few months later, Andrew Flintoff was involved in a high-speed crash during a drag race. The former cricketer was wearing a motorcycling suit when the crash occurred. He lost control of his motorised trike and the vehicle careered off the road. He was seen saying, "I can't stop", as he was thrown down the runway. He was rescued by his crew, and emerged from the wreck with barely a scratch.
Flintoff had joined the show in October 2018. He has appeared in both musical theatre and documentary television, and has hosted ITV's All-Star Musicals in December. In addition to his work on Top Gear, he has appeared in a BBC drama called Love, Lies and Records. He has also starred in Kay Mellor's Fat Friends The Musical.
When he was a cricketer, Flintoff played 141 limited-overs internationals, and he was named man of the series in the 2005 Ashes. He was captain in both 2006 and 2007, and played 79 tests for England. He retired from international cricket at the age of 32.
During his career on Top Gear, Flintoff has been involved in minor accidents. He escaped from a 129mph crash in the Yorkshire Dales in 2019. He was also involved in a near-death crash while he was driving a red Lamborghini. In a recent interview, he said he was able to escape from the crash because he had a helmet on and was in full motorcycling gear.
In the meantime, the BBC has announced that it is postponing the filming of a new Top Gear episode. During his recovery, Flintoff will be unable to make the programme.
