Galen Rupp Wins Chicago Marathon

Galen Rupp has made America great again by trumping athletes at the just concluded 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. He became the first U.S. runner to win the Chicago Marathon in 15 years with his 2:09:20 victory on Sunday afternoon, as athletics news report.

A Brief History

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is a spectacular event that brings together close to 2 million viewers, who come to cheer the athletes as they run the streets of Chicago city. The first race was organized in 1977, attracting about 4,200 runners, but the event has since grown to become one of the biggest marathon challenges in the world. In fact, the Chicago Marathon has become a big international event that draws more than 40,000 participants each year. Since its inception as the Mayor Daley Marathon in 1977, the event has been a well-established tradition in the city of Chicago.

The 2017 Chicago Marathon

The 40th edition of the Chicago Marathon was held on October 8, and more than 40,000 athletes took to the Windy City streets, starting and finishing in Grant Park, after having traversed close to 30 neighbourhoods as they competed for the coveted trophy. The event was graced by four former champions who’ve set world records at the Chicago Marathon, and these include Steve Jones, Catherine Ndereba, Khalid Khannouchi, and Paula Radcliffe.

The WMM #5 Winner

Congratulations are in order for Galen Rupp, who has made history today and has proven to the rest of the world that Americans too have what it takes to win at the famous Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Rupp is the 2017 Chicago Marathon winner, having crossed the finish line in an incredible time of 2:09:20, beating fierce competition from different athletes who competed in the run.

Galen Rupp’s win is the first American victory in the competition since Khalid Khannouchi won it in 2002, about fifteen years ago. And the long wait to retain the marathon’s trophy has finally ended after Rupp showed exemplary sportsmanship by competing aggressively at the 2017 Chicago Marathon and ensuring that Americans had a reason to smile by winning the race. The event was Rupp’s fourth marathon ever, which makes it pretty exciting for him to win it, hence, ending the trophy drought that’s currently plaguing America.

The Runners-up

Abel Kirui, the Kenyan defending champion, also fielded in but was no match for the 31-year-old American athlete who took and maintained the lead up to the finish line. Bernard Kipyego, also a Kenyan, finished a distant third. Kirui was the favourite athlete of the Chicago Marathon predictions, slated to win at the event, and many fans and bettors were rooting for him to take the number one spot at the podium. In fact, many gamblers had wagered money on Kirui, but the Chicago Marathon odds changed in favour of Rupp who took home the win in the end.
