Short History

Before heading to F1 news, we must mention that the Canadian Grand Prix has an old history, and it goes back to the 1960s, when the rivalry between the English and French speaking Canada meant the country's Grand Prix had actually two homes: Mont-Tremblant one year and Mosport Park the next. In the 1970s, Mont-Tremblant was quickly deemed dangerous and the race moved to Mosport Park.

The races were held each year with a few exceptions and all looked well until 7 October 2008, when the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the Formula One calendar in 2009. The Montreal race was left off the list for the first time since 1987. In November 2009, Quebec's officials and the organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix announced they had reached a settlement with F1 Administration and a brand new 5-year contract was signed.

The 2016 Canadian Grand Prix

Last year's edition was an F1 motor race that took place on June 12 2016 at the famous Circuit Giles Villeneuve in Montreal. The defending champion in 2017 is Lewis Hamilton, and he is currently standing second in the Formula One Drivers' Standings.

The 2016 event was a real battle for the first place, so we expect this year to be the same. F1 news hail Vettel as a favourite for winning the event, but the defending champions has something to say about that.

Hamilton Says He Can Overhaul Vettel in 2017

Latest news on Canadian Grand Prix show that Lewis Hamilton admitted in an interview on June 8 that it will be extremely difficult to shorten the advantage his main rival Vettel of Ferrari has in the F1 World Championship in the 2017 season.

"It's going to take a lot for Mercedes to catch those points up, yet I believe so much can happen in the 2017 season. We still have races left in the calendar, 14 to be exact. It's quite early to say we are on the back foot. Even if we are not in a comfortable position, that does not mean we can't fight and win the F1 championship. It will be hard, but it can be done."

We should also mention that his words are backed by the fact that Montreal is a favourite circuit of Hamilton and he has won it five times in nine races. Hamilton told the press that they are going to try to make sure the car is fast in the next 14 Grand Prix's.

Just hours before the official start of the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix, the Drivers' Standings show Vettel as a leader with 129 points, well ahead Lewis Hamilton with only 104 points accumulated so far.

Valtteri Bottas is third with 75 points and Kimi Räikkönen is fourth with 67 points. Daniel Ricciardo is 5th with 52 points. The battle will be hard between defending champion Hamilton and the current leader of the Drivers' Standings. The podium will definitely see drivers from the Top 5.
