Elfyn Evans has emerged as the Wales Rally GB 2017 winner after managing to hold a 37.3 second advantage over second placed Thierry Neuville. He was also able to finish a further 7.9 seconds ahead of Sebastien Ogier, although the Frenchman ended up claiming his world championship title for a fifth consecutive time. Wales Rally GB has now been won by a Welshman for the first time, beating all motorsport betting odds, and it has also been won by a British driver for the first time since 2000 – when Richard Burns was successful.
There was a huge excitement in the motorsport news ahead of this event as Ogier was expected to seal his championship title quite comfortably. Yet, the Wales Rally results also witnessed the emergence of Evans. The 28-year-old has just been able to register an immensely successful WRC campaign. This is his best ever season after he managed to come up in the second place at Argentina and Finland. Yet, the prospect of winning the Rally Wales has often been a dream, as this event has not been dominated by British drivers in recent times. The victory at this event confirms the return of Evans to top-level racing. It was only in 2016 that he lost his WRC drive due to poor form.
Elfyn Evans managed to maintain his Rally GB lead in spite of the fog on the Saturday night stages. Even though Sebastien Ogier gained most, moving up to 2nd place and closer to clinching the World Rally Championship, the whole field actually struggled for visibility as fog moved in on the stage that began the evening loop. Evans dropped time, going only 7th quickest on the stage, yet he managed to emerge with a larger overall lead as his closest opponents fared worse. Thierry Neuville dropped from 2nd to 3rd in the fog, while a past title contender (Tanak) from 2nd to 6th. Ogier really did well, picking up a puncture and coming through 4th-fastest and 20s faster than his championship opponents.
Ogier came into the event with little doubt about his world Championship title and he has been able to seal the same with still one race left in Australia. Ogier is in a Ford Fiesta and he has been able to amass a sizable 215 points, which are substantially ahead of Neuville at 183 points and Ott Tanak at 169 points. Even then, Ogier may be disappointed a little not to emerge successful once again in the British rally. He was able to win the title in the last two editions at Wales.
This event is undoubtedly one of the high-profile races in the FIA World Rally Championship calendar. It has been around since 1932. Sébastien Ogier is one of the top drivers when it comes to this event after having won it on four occasions – alongside Hannu Mikkola and Petter Solberg. Ford have been the successful manufacturer when it comes to this event with 12 wins.
