Hayle and Baysa Favourites for 2017 Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is one of the top marathon events in the world. First held in 1897, the 2017 Boston Marathon will be the 121st run of the event. Over the decades, it has grown in popularity on a tremendous scale. After starting with only 18 participants in 1897, the event witnessed just over 27,000 runners in the 2016 edition. A similar number of participants are expected in the 2017 event. Even though most of these participants belong to the amateur category, elite athletes also take part in the event.

The 2017 Boston Marathon will take place in the American city with the same name on April 17th. The most important marathon in the world will see big names competing and trying to break the world record.

History

The road marathon is held in Eastern Massachusetts. It progresses in such a way as to end in Boston. The record for the men’s course is 2:03:02 set by Geoffrey Mutai in 2011. In the women’s event, Buzunesh Deba holds the record for setting a time of 2:19:59 in 2014. The 2017 version will once again be held on Patriots’ Day, which falls on the third Monday of April.

Competition

The 2017 edition promises to be highly entertaining with two Olympic medallists, 18 Olympians, and the six previous winners lining up for the race. Defending champion Lemi Berhanu Hayle will be a favourite for the men’s event, while Atsede Baysa lines up to defend the women’s title. Both are from Ethiopia, as have been several runners of the Boston marathon in recent years. Hayle may be only 22 years old, but he has managed six wins in nine marathons. Even though the 2016 Rio Olympics witnessed Hayle manage only a 13th place finish, he has been placed as one of the favourites.

Apart from the serious contenders for the win, the field also includes several elite athletes like Meb Keflezighi, who managed to win the Boston Marathon in 2014. There are also names like Emmanuel Mutai who are yet to win this major honour.

2017 Boston Marathon Spectators Must Leave 7 Banned Items at Home

Spectators planning to cheer on the Boston Marathon runners from the sidelines will need to check the list released by Boston Athletic Association to see which items are prohibited along the race route and in high-security areas.

  • Weapons, including knives, mace, and firearms.
  • Glass containers, coolers, cans, or any item that could hold more than 1L of liquid.
  • Suitcases, backpacks, and over-the-shoulder bags.
  • Fuels, fireworks, explosives, flammable liquids.
  • Comforters, sleeping bags, blankets.
  • Fire gear, props, such as sporting equipment, or fire and military gear.
  • Any costume material that covers the face.

Conclusion: Who Should You Watch at the 2017 Boston Marathon?

Lemi Berhanu Hayle of Ethiopia is probably the most important name on the list. The defending champion is very young, but he definitely knows how to win. At just 22, the 2016 Boston Marathon champion has won 6 out of 9 career marathon starts. Meb Keflezighi of USA is another important name. The 2014 Boston Marathon champion is not a favourite for the podium anymore, but he's still has something to prove.

Galen Rupp is the one who beat Lemi Berhanu Hayle at the Rio Olympics, winning a bronze medal. His entry into this year's Boston Marathon event has sparked levels of excitement, as he is the preeminent US distance runner of this era. We believe he's got chances for a podium.

It's still hard to predict anything since the marathon is a lonely sport in which everything depends on so many factors. Bring it, Boston!
